Drawing Inspiration from Medieval Art
As with all her designs, Catherine’s process is rooted in extensive research and inspiration gathering. “I take a lot of inspiration from medieval illuminated manuscripts,” she explains. “You can probably see some of that influence in the design—both in the colours and the decorative style.” Her love for historical art forms is reflected in the ornate details of the Celestial Snake Scarf, which combines modern digital illustration with the timeless beauty of medieval artistry.
Catherine’s creative process starts with a deep dive into research. Whether it’s browsing Pinterest, visiting museums, or examining old books, Catherine gathers as much information as she can to fuel her imagination. “Things start clicking and falling into place, and that’s when I know I’m ready to start drawing,” she says. For Catherine, the process is a meditative one. After sketching out rough concepts by hand on her iPad, she refines them with fine details, adding tiny lines and dashes that eventually form the intricate design you see on the scarf.
